IKEA Furniture Disassembly for Moving: What Survives and What Doesn't

You are planning a move and half your apartment is furnished with IKEA. The bookshelf, the wardrobe, the bed frame, the kitchen cabinets — all of it assembled from flat packs a few years ago. The question is whether any of it can be taken apart, trucked across town, and put back together without turning into a wobbly pile of particleboard. The answer depends almost entirely on one thing most people never think about: the type of fastener holding each piece together.

Why the Fastener Matters More Than the Brand

A crooked door, a shelf that sags, an ugly chip on the laminate — in ninety percent of cases the fault lies not with the person doing the work but with the fastener that was chosen or, more often, reused one too many times. The internal structure of particleboard (LDSB, the material IKEA uses for most of its catalog) is loose and porous. A fastener's thread cuts channels into that structure. Pull the fastener out and drive it back in, and those channels widen. After two or three cycles the grip weakens noticeably. After four or five the hole may simply crumble.

This is the core problem with moving flat-pack furniture. The furniture itself is fine. The panels, the laminate, the edge banding — all of it travels well if wrapped properly. But the connection points, the places where one board meets another, are the weak links. Everything comes down to what kind of hardware sits in those joints.

The Two Fasteners You Need to Know

The Confirmat Screw: Workhorse With a Limit

The confirmat (also called a Euro screw) is the most common fastener in flat-pack furniture. It is a thick, coarse-threaded bolt designed specifically for particleboard. Its wide thread bites deep into the soft material, creating a strong joint that resists both pulling apart and rocking side to side. Most IKEA shelving units, bookcases, dressers, and basic wardrobes are held together primarily with confirmats.

The strength is real — a properly seated confirmat makes a rigid 90-degree joint. But there is a hard limit. After two to three disassembly-and-reassembly cycles, the particleboard around the threads starts to give. The hole gets sloppy. The joint still holds, but it is no longer tight, and the piece of furniture begins to feel less solid than it did the day you first assembled it. A fourth disassembly often means the screw spins freely in the hole and you need to repair the particleboard with glue and wooden plugs before you can reassemble.

The Cam Lock (Eccentric/Minifix): the Survivor

The cam lock is a two-part system. A metal stud screws into one panel. A rotating disc (the cam) sits inside a drilled pocket in the adjoining panel. Turn the cam a half-rotation with a screwdriver, and its internal lobe grabs the stud's head and pulls the two panels together with considerable force. The stud never leaves its panel. The cam never leaves its panel. Nothing gets reamed out.

This is why cam locks can handle dozens of assembly cycles with no loss of strength. IKEA uses them in its higher-end and more complex pieces — the PAX wardrobe system, METOD kitchen cabinets, BRIMNES beds, and some configurations of HAVSTA and BESTÅ storage. If you open a joint and see a round disc the size of a quarter recessed into the panel edge, that is a cam lock, and that joint will survive your move without any trouble.

Quick Fastener Check Before You Start
  • Look at the joint. If you see a hex or Phillips head on the outside face of a panel, it is a confirmat. Count how many times this piece has been disassembled before — if this will be the third or fourth time, expect weakened joints.
  • Look inside the joint. If you see a round disc with a slot in the panel edge, it is a cam lock. These handle repeated disassembly well.
  • Check for wooden dowels. Small wooden pegs glued into drilled holes. They are not load-bearing fasteners — they position the panels and prevent shifting. If they were glued in, they may snap when you pull the joint apart, and you will need replacement dowels for reassembly.

Which IKEA Lines Tend to Survive — and Which Do Not

Not all IKEA product lines handle disassembly equally. The difference comes down to construction method and fastener type.

Simple shelving — KALLAX, BILLY, EKET, LAIVA — uses mostly confirmats and wooden dowels. These are easy to take apart and reasonably easy to put back together, but the joints are unforgiving if you have already assembled and disassembled the unit before. KALLAX in particular is a simple grid of panels joined at right angles; one person can disassemble it in twenty minutes. But because each joint relies on confirmats biting into particleboard, the second or third reassembly is noticeably less tight than the first.

The PAX wardrobe system uses a mix of cam locks and confirmats. The main structural frame — sides, top, bottom — typically uses cam locks, which means the skeleton survives moves well. Internal fittings (shelves, drawer rails, clothes rods) attach with shelf pins, screws, or clips that are easy to remove and reinstall. Doors come off by lifting them out of their hinges. The process for disassembling a PAX unit follows a straightforward sequence: empty the wardrobe, remove shelves and rods, disconnect soft-close mechanisms, unlock the door limiters, lift doors off their tracks, remove the outer hardware, and then separate the panels.

The Disassembly Process, Step by Step

Tools You Actually Need

A power drill with a reverse function and the right bit (Phillips, Pozidriv, or 4mm hex depending on the fastener). A rubber mallet for tapping panels apart without denting the laminate. An awl or thin flathead screwdriver for prying out wooden dowels. Pliers. Zip-lock bags and a marker for hardware.

The Sequence That Prevents Damage

The order matters. Work from the inside out. Remove all contents first — books, clothes, dishes, everything. Take out removable shelves and drawers. Detach doors. Only then start on the structural joints. If there is a back panel (usually thin hardboard nailed or screwed on), remove it before you try to separate the main panels, because it holds the whole box square and you cannot flex the panels apart while it is attached.

Label every panel and bag of hardware. Use painter's tape and a marker directly on the panel edges (the tape peels off without leaving residue). Write which side faces out, which edge is top. Put all screws, cam locks, and shelf pins from one piece of furniture into one labeled bag. Tape the bag to the largest panel of that piece. This sounds tedious but it saves enormous time and confusion at the other end of the move.

If a Confirmat Hole Is Already Loose
  • Wooden toothpick method. Dip two or three round toothpicks in wood glue, push them into the stripped hole, snap off the excess flush with the surface. Let dry overnight. The new wood gives the confirmat fresh material to grip.
  • Dowel plug repair. For badly damaged holes, drill out the old hole to 8mm, glue in a hardwood dowel, let it cure, then re-drill the pilot hole for the confirmat. This is a permanent fix.
  • Move to a cam lock. If you have the tools and patience, you can convert a confirmat joint to a cam lock. Drill a 15mm Forstner hole in the panel face for the cam body, and a pilot hole in the adjoining panel for the stud. This is the most durable long-term fix but requires precise measurements.

What to Do With Pieces That Will Not Survive

Some furniture is honestly not worth disassembling. A LACK coffee table — the lightest, cheapest line in the IKEA catalog — is held together with short dowels and glue. Once assembled, it is not meant to come apart. The same applies to any piece where you see that the joints were glued during initial assembly. If a panel will not come free with moderate hand pressure after the fasteners are removed, it was glued, and forcing it apart will tear the laminate surface off the particleboard.

The practical test is simple: remove the fasteners from one joint and try to separate the panels by hand. If they slide apart cleanly, the piece is designed for disassembly and will handle the move. If the panels resist or you hear cracking, stop. That piece either travels in one assembled unit (if it fits through doorways and into the truck) or gets replaced at the other end.

Moving Without Disassembly

For wardrobes or shelving units that need to be repositioned rather than fully taken apart, the approach is different. Tip the piece slightly and slide furniture dollies underneath. Two people minimum — one tilts while the other places the dolly. Keep the unit upright at all times; laying a tall particleboard cabinet on its side puts stress on joints that were designed to bear weight vertically, not horizontally. Remove the doors and drawers to reduce weight and eliminate swinging parts, but leave the frame intact.

Protecting Panels During Transport

Disassembled panels scratch easily. The laminate surface is tough against everyday wear but vulnerable to point impacts and abrasion during a move. Wrap each panel individually in moving blankets or stretch wrap. Pay special attention to corners and edges — a chipped edge on particleboard cannot be repaired invisibly.

Do not stack panels flat in the truck with heavy items on top. Stand them on edge, leaning against the truck wall with padding between them. This distributes their own weight along the strongest axis and prevents bowing. Glass shelves and mirror doors travel separately, packed vertically between layers of cardboard with corner protectors. Flat panels also fit neatly into a storage unit between moves.

Hardware You Should Buy Before Reassembly
  • Spare confirmats. A bag of 7×50mm confirmats costs almost nothing and saves you if the originals strip. Bring extras.
  • Wooden dowels. If your IKEA piece uses 8mm dowels (most do), buy a pack. The originals often snap or stay glued in the old panel when you pull the joint apart.
  • Shelf pins. These are easy to lose. Buy a handful of 5mm shelf pins as insurance.

The Chicago Angle: Tight Doorways and Walk-Ups

If you are moving within the Chicago area — whether from a vintage walk-up in Evanston to a townhouse in Naperville, or from a high-rise in Skokie to a single-family in Joliet — the building stock adds its own constraints. Older apartments across Illinois, from Rockford to Springfield, often have narrow hallways, tight stairwells, and door frames that will not clear a fully assembled wardrobe. A Realistic Assessment

IKEA furniture is designed with disassembly in mind. The company even published official disassembly instructions for its most popular lines — BILLY, MALM, PAX, BRIMNES, LYCKSELE. That said, "designed for disassembly" does not mean "infinitely reusable." The practical limit for most particleboard pieces on confirmat fasteners is two to three full disassembly cycles. After that, joints start to loosen and you are into repair territory.

Pieces built on cam locks (PAX frame, METOD cabinets, BRIMNES beds) handle more cycles. Metal-framed items like sofa beds handle even more. And anything that was glued during assembly — some LACK tables, certain drawer bottoms — is effectively a one-time build.

The best approach before any move is to open one joint on each piece of furniture you plan to take apart. Look at the fastener. If it is a cam lock, proceed with confidence. If it is a confirmat, check the hole — does the screw still bite firmly, or does it turn freely at the end? That thirty-second check tells you whether the piece will arrive at your new home in the same condition it left the old one, or whether you are better off budgeting for a replacement.
